CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is a special type of X-ray machine used in situations where regular dental or facial X-rays are insufficient.
It has similarities with the CT scanning machines used by doctors all over the world, however, CBCT moves a cone-shaped X-ray beam around the patient’s body to produce a series of images or views. This technology was developed to allow CT images to be produced with a smaller, less expensive machine that can easily fit into dental treatment rooms.
A CBCT scan uses a special type of technology to generate 3D images of dental structures, soft tissues, nerve paths and bones in the craniofacial region. The scan produces a series of high quality images to give us a greater understanding of your dental condition and allow us to plan any treatment more precisely.
CBCT scanners are not used routinely because they produce more radiation exposure than regular X-rays however, they are necessary when X-rays prove inconclusive or insufficient.
Metal objects, including jewellery, eyeglasses, dentures, and hairpins may affect the CT images, so we recommend that you leave these at home or remove them prior to your exam.share
